Monday, Happy Monday

Have you heard of Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project? I heard about it several months ago from Bob Sutton, who is a big fan. Gretchen is spending a year test driving every “principle, tip, theory, and scientific study” she can find on happiness and blogging (and writing a book) about it.
As a result of her happiness adventures, she has started to de-bunk myths. Here are a couple of my favorites (which serve me both professionally and personally):
- Nothing changes a person’s happiness level – no! just like the growth versus fixed mindset, people can actually grow happier if they set their mind to it. The point is that we should work harder to be happier.
- Venting anger relieves it – nope, in fact, you are more likely to start feeling happy if you act happy (even if you are actually angry). And, even better, by acting friendly/happy towards others, they are more likely to act that way toward you. It’s contagious!
And as a special treat (in a good, productive kind of way), check out this youtube video Gretchen posted – a spontaneous musical in the Antwerp Central Station. If it doesn’t make you smile, smile anyway and you’ll be happier!
